About Tree Bender
Bonsai, Taught Simply
I’m Dean Sauls, a bonsai artist and workshop teacher based in Cary, North Carolina. I create and teach bonsai with a focus on simple structure, natural movement, and hands-on learning.
What started as a personal practice became something I wanted to share — helping people slow down, work with their hands, and create something living.

Where Art and Bonsai Meet
I’m also a visual artist, and that still shapes how I see each tree. Painting and bonsai both come down to balance, restraint, and knowing what to remove. I’m not trying to force a tree into something unnatural — just guiding it into a shape that feels right.
Hands On learning
Teaching in a Simple Way
Workshops are designed for beginners and focused on real understanding. You’ll learn what to cut, what to keep, how to shape your tree, and how to care for it after you take it home. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s leaving with something you built and actually understand.
